Susan Helms, a member of the Space Shuttle Endeavor crew became the first US military woman in space on 13 January 1993. At the time she was a USAF Major.

Mercury Seven was the group of seven Mercury astronauts selected by NASA on April 9, 1959. These seven original American astronauts were Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper and Deke Slayton.

Alan Shepard (1923-1998) was the first US man in space when he flew a sub-orbital rocket flight in his Freedom 7 spacecraft on 5 May, 1961. He flew 303 miles approx. in the 15-minute flight, reaching a maximum altitude of 116.5 miles.
