Robert Goddard was an American physicist and rocket engineer who, in 1926 launched the worlds first liquid-fueled rocket. Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard is considered the father of modern rocket propulsion.

Biography (1882-1945)
Born in Massachusetts, Goddard became fascinated by the idea of space travel from an early age and after obtaining a degree in physics, put his mind to developing a space rocket. In 1919 he published his theory of rocketry and in the 1930s he launched his first stabilized rocket. The US space program grew out of his pioneering efforts, although his work was largely ignored until after his death. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland is named after him.
