Space and Astronomy 2011 was an exciting year. Many new space missions were launched. The year also featured the final flight of the Space Shuttle. This page includes launch schedule info for 2011 including the space shuttle.

January 2011

 *  First Launch of Zenit-2SB/Fregat: Zenit-2SB/Fregat is an Ukrainian expendable carrier rocket. It is a member of the Zenit family of rockets, which were designed by the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau. The first launch of a Zenit-2SB/Fregat took place on 20 January 2011. The payload was a Elektro-L new generation weather satellite. Elektro–L is a new-generation series of meteorological satellites developed for the Russian Federal Space Agency by NPO Lavochkin. The first satellite, Elektro–L 1 was launched on 20 January 2011. It is the first Russian weather satellite that successfully operates in geostationary orbit and is currently the second operational Russian weather satellite.

* NASA's First Solar Sail NanoSail-D Deploys in Low-Earth Orbit:  NanoSail-D unfurled the first ever 100-square-foot solar sail in low-Earth orbit on January 20, 2011.

 * NASA seeking Tenants for Florida Launch Facilities: On Monday 24 January 2011, NASA released a request for information from industry on potential future uses for the Kennedy Space Center's extensive space shuttle launch facilities once the spaceships are retired later this year.

 * First Delta IV Heavy launch from Vandenberg: USA-224 (NRO Launch 49) was launched on January 20, 2011 on the first flight of a Delta IV Heavy from Vandenberg from Space Launch Complex 6 at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The launch was conducted by United Launch Alliance. The American reconnaissance satellite was a KH-11 optical imaging satellite.

* HTV-2 (Kounotori 2): Kounotori 2 also known as HTV-2 was the second Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle to resupply the International Space Station. It was launched on 22 January 2011. Kounotori 2 was initially scheduled to launch on January 22, 2011, but postponed for bad weather forecast. After an two-month stay, Kounotori 2 was un-berthed from the space station on 28 March 2011 and burned up upon re-entering the atmosphere on March 30, 2011.

 * ISS Progress 41: Progress 41 spacecraft (Progress M-09M) was launched on 29 January 2011 in order to resupply the International Space Station. It was scheduled to arrive at the space station during Expedition 26 and will undock during Expedition 27.

 * NASA marks 25 years after Challenger disaster:  Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch at an altitude of 14,000 meters (46,000 feet), killing everyone on board on January 28, 1986. Schoolchildren and space enthusiasts around the world watched live as the Challenger lifted off carrying seven astronauts including the first teacher, Christa McAuliffe, to embark on a mission to space.

February 2011

 * ATV-2: Automated Transfer Vehicle 002 (ATV-002) or Johannes Kepler is a European unmanned cargo resupply spacecraft named after German astronomer Johannes Kepler. The spacecraft was launched 17 February 2011 on a mission to supply the International Space Station with propellant, water, air, and dry cargo on an Ariane 5ES rocket, from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. It was the second ATV, the first being Jules Verne.

 *  STS-133: Space Shuttle Discovery delivered the Express Logistics Carrier 4 (ELC4), a Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MLPM) and critical spare components to the International Space Station. It was launched on February 24, 2011.

March 2011

 * Glory Mission: The Glory spacecraft failed to reach orbit after liftoff aboard a Taurus XL rocket on March 4 at 5:09 a.m. EST from Vandenberg Air Force Base in southern California. The Glory Mission was to help increase our understanding of the Earth's energy balance by collecting data on the properties of aerosols and black carbon in the Earth's atmosphere and how the Sun's irradiance affects the Earth's climate. Previously it was going to be on 22 November 2010.

April 2011

 *  Soyuz TMA-21:  Soyuz TMA-21 was launched on 4 April 2011 to the International Space Station. It transported 3 crew members. TMA-21 was the 109th flight of a Soyuz spacecraft. The launch of Soyuz TMA-21 was devoted to the 50th anniversary of the first space mission by Yuri Gagarin.

 * First Arianespace Soyuz Rocket: The debut flight of first Arianespace Soyuz rocket maybe launched in September 2010 from a brand-new launch pad at Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. The payload will be the Hylas communications satellite for Avanti Communications of the United Kingdom.

 * Resourcesat-2: Resourcesat-2 is a follow on mission to Resourcesat-1 by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). Compared to Resourcesat-1, LISS-4 multispectral swath has been enhanced from 23 km to 70 km based on user needs. Suitable changes including miniaturization in payload electronics have been incorporated in Resourcesat-2. Resourcesat-2 is slated for launch in 20 April 2011.

 * STS-134:  Space shuttle Endeavour will deliver an EXPRESS Logistics Carrier-3 (ELC-3) and an Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to the International Space Station. It maybe launched on April 29, 2010.

May 2011

 *  Falcon 1e: The Falcon 1e is an American small partially reusable launch system which is being developed by SpaceX. It will replace the Falcon 1, which was retired in 2009 following five launches, two of which were successful. The Falcon 1e consists of a new first stage, the same second stage used on the Falcon 1 and a new larger payload fairing. It is expected to make its maiden flight in mid 2011.

 * RadioAstron (or Spektr R) RadioAstron (or Spektr R) is a space radio telescope. It is funded by the Russian Astro Space Center. It will be launched by a Zenit-2SB carrier rocket with a Fregat-2CB upper stage in May 2011. Main scientific goal of the mission is the study of various astronomical objects with unprecedented angular resolution up to few millionth of an arcsecond.

June 2011

 * Aquarius: Aquarius is a focused satellite mission to measure global Sea Surface Salinity (SSS). Scientific progress is limited because conventional in situ SSS sampling is too sparse to give the global view of salinity variability that only a satellite can provide. Aquarius will resolve missing physical processes that link the water cycle, the climate, and the ocean. Its scheduled launch date is June 9, 2011 on a United Launch Alliance Delta II 7320 from Vandenberg Air Force Base - SLC 2. The Aquarius mission will provide the first-ever global maps of salt concentrations in the ocean surface needed to understand heat transport and storage in the ocean.

 * LISA Pathfinder: LISA Pathfinder is an ESA space probe to be launched in June 2011.
