Plot

In the 22nd century around 2110, the mega corporation Buy n Large assumed every economic service on Earth, including the government. Overrun by un-recycled waste, the planet eventually became so polluted that it could no longer support life. In an attempt to keep humanity alive, Buy n Large sponsored a five-year exodus to outer space aboard massive executive starliners. These starliners were giant cruise ships in space that supported every need for the humans with a fully-automated robot crew, the most famous of which was the Axiom. Hundreds of thousands of WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) units were left behind to clean up the planet by compacting the trash into cubes and stacking them into skyscraper-like towers for easy disposal. However, this plan failed as Buy n Large determined Earth was too toxic for return to be feasible. Seven hundred years later in the year 2815, only one WALL-E (voice created by Ben Burtt) remains operational.

Centuries of prolonged activation have caused WALL-E to become sentient. He collects items that he finds among the refuse, including spare parts for himself from other inactive WALL-E units, and saves a seedling plant, which he re-pots in an old boot. Then one day, he meets EVE (Elissa Knight), a feminine probe sent from the Axiom whose directive is to find plant life. He falls in love with her upon first sight, and though she does not reciprocate his feelings at first because her only concern is for her directive, she eventually becomes fascinated and amused by his personality. When WALL-E shows her the plant he found, she stores it inside herself and deactivates. WALL-E goes to great lengths to protect her motionless body until she is retrieved by the ship that delivered her. Distraught, WALL-E clings to the outer hull as it departs into the depths of space, eventually arriving onboard the Axiom.

WALL-E finds that, after centuries of living in micro-gravity, the humans aboard the Axiom have lost considerable bone and muscle mass, rendering them too obese and weak to stand or move without robotic assistance. Every task is now automated, including piloting the ship, which is handled by the autopilot, simply named Auto (voiced by the MacInTalk system). Aboard the Axiom, WALL-E follows EVE to her destination. His peculiar behaviour causes both humans and robots to act outside their normal routines. In particular, WALL-E causes a cleaning robot named M-O (voice also created by Ben Burtt) to stop his designated duties in order to obsessively clean the tracks of filth he leaves behind, and inadvertently awakens two humans, John (John Ratzenberger) and Mary (Kathy Najimy), to the world around them and to each other.

EVE tries to present the plant to the Axiom's captain, Captain B. McCrea (Jeff Garlin), but finds it is missing. Auto tells Captain McCrea that EVE has malfunctioned, whereupon she is sent to the robot repair ward with WALL-E, who is sent to be cleaned. Mistakenly thinking that the diagnostic machine is trying to hurt her, WALL-E takes EVE's cannon arm and inadvertently frees all the malfunctioning robots by accidentally shooting the power source of the robotic arms that run the repair ward. Her attempt to retrieve the arm makes her appear hostile, and she is mistakenly labeled a rogue robot by security. EVE tries to send WALL-E back to Earth in an escape pod to keep him from causing any more trouble while she tries to find the plant, but he refuses to leave without her. Auto's assistant, GO-4, suddenly arrives and deposits the missing plant in the pod. As WALL-E goes to retrieve the plant, GO-4 launches the pod with the self-destruct armed. WALL-E manages to save the plant before the pod explodes. EVE is so happy and relieved that she "kisses" him (causing a static discharge between the two), and they dance around the ship, flying together through space.

EVE returns the plant to Captain McCrea. Curious to see images of Earth, McCrea projects EVE's security camera footage, which shows EVE the lengths to which WALL-E went to protect her while she was deactivated, and she begins to fall in love with him. Captain McCrea is enthralled by earlier images depicting life as it was before the rise of Buy n Large, and shocked by the environmental devastation on Earth depicted in EVE's recordings. He decides that humanity must return to Earth to make amends. However, Auto insists that they cannot return to Earth, and is forced to reveal that Buy n Large CEO Shelby Forthright (Fred Willard) ordered the autopilots never to do so, having deemed the planet too toxic to ever support life again. Unable to disobey the order, Auto locks Captain McCrea in his quarters and tries to dispose of the plant. When WALL-E takes the plant from him and refuses to relinquish it, Auto shocks him, severely damaging his hardware, and temporarily deactivates EVE, throwing them both into a garbage chute with the plant.

EVE awakens in the waste disposal facility of the Axiom, and is nearly jettisoned among the garbage into space along with WALL-E and the plant, but M-O, who had continued to clean up WALL-E's tracks, saves and befriends them. EVE searches in vain for replacement hardware for WALL-E, even dismissing her original directive to do so. WALL-E, however, selflessly insists that EVE carry out her original directive while reminding EVE of the parts he has accumulated on Earth which may be able to save him. With the plant in tow, EVE carries WALL-E out, and they recruit the malfunctioning robots to help get past security and make their way to one of the main passenger decks of the ship. They are aided by Captain McCrea, who hotwires the ship from the confines of his quarters and directs them to the holo-detector, a pedestal that rises from the floor of the deck and, once it scans the plant, will activate an automatic hyperspace jump to Earth. After tricking Auto into believing he has retrieved the plant, Captain McCrea battles with Auto, during which Auto tilts the ship on its side, piling the immobile humans in a corner. While EVE protects the humans from the trams falling towards them, Auto retracts the holo-detector. WALL-E uses his body to jam it open, which crushes him, much to EVE's horror. Captain McCrea stands up unaided (to the amazement of the passengers) and manually overrides Auto, restoring order aboard the ship. The humans and robots work together to place the plant in the holo-detector, releasing WALL-E and activating the warp to Earth.

Having arrived on Earth, EVE frantically repairs WALL-E using his spare parts. However, the extent of the damage seems to have erased his memory and personality: he begins crushing his treasured collectibles into cubes, following his original directive. Her attempts to make him remember prove useless, and EVE is devastated in the belief that the WALL-E she knew and loved may be gone forever. As a parting gesture, she takes hold of his hand before "kissing" him again. The resulting spark reboots WALL-E's memory, and he suddenly recognizes her as they clasp hands in joy. With a renewed sense of purpose, humanity and robots begin working together to restore Earth's biosphere, directed by the enthusiastic Captain McCrea.

Other info

After directing Finding Nemo, another Pixar film, Stanton felt that Pixar achieved believable water physics and was willing to direct a film set in space. Most of the characters do not have human voices; they instead communicate with body language and robotic sounds, designed by Ben Burtt, that resemble voices. It is the first animated feature by Pixar to have several segments featuring live action characters.

WALL-E Review: 7.5/10

Pros

Its quite funny. Nice -FX. The first 40 minutes or so in which barely any dialogue is spoken and almost no human figures appear on screen, is a cinematic poem of such wit and beauty that its darker implications may take a while to sink in.

Cons

The story seems a bit confusing at times. Both moving and laugh-out-loud funny.

Verdict

Family-friendly sci-fi adventure movie highly recommended.
