It was designed to study the geoscience and climate of Mars. It suffered a mechanical failure and became silent after sending only one picture of Mars back to Earth. Although none of the primary objectives of the mission were achieved, cruise mode data were collected up to loss of contact.
Mass 1,018 kg (2,240 lb)
The Mars Observer total mission cost including development, construction, launch and ground support was estimated at $813 million.
