Star Trek XI (2009)
J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature
film was billed as "not your father's Star Trek," but your
father will probably love it anyway. And what's not to
love? It has enough action, emotional impact, humor and
sheer fun for any moviegoer and Trekkers will enjoy plenty
of insider references and a cast that seems ideally suited
to portray the characters we know they'll become later.
Both a prequel and a reboot, Star Trek introduces us to
James T. Kirk (Chris Pine of The Princess Diaries 2),
a sharp but aimless young man who's prodded by a Starfleet
captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), to enlist and
make a difference. At the Academy, Kirk runs afoul of a
Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto of Heroes),
but their conflict has to take a back seat when Starfleet,
including its new ship, the Enterprise, has to answer an
emergency call from Vulcan. What follows is a stirring
tale of genocide and revenge launched by a Romulan (Eric
Bana) with a particular interest in Spock, and we get to
see the familiar crew come together, including McCoy (Karl
Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekhov
(Anton Yelchin), and Scottie (Simon Pegg).

Star Trek: The Original Series -
Season One (DVD/HDDVD Combo, Remastered Edition) (1966)
With HD DVD on one side of
each disc and standard DVD on the other, the series has
been remastered from the original camera negative. The
1960s special effects have been replaced with 21st century
computer-generated imagery to give new depth and
atmosphere to various elements including the main title
sequence, the galaxy shots frequently seen from the
Enterprise’s bridge, the battle scenes, planets and alien
ships, some of the matte paintings used as backdrops for
new worlds, as well as the Enterprise and other Starships,
which have been replaced with CGI-created ships.

Star Trek The Animated Series
(1973)
Starring: William Shatner, Majel Barrett Director: Bill
ReedStar
Trek: The Animated Series is
often referred to as Star Trek's "fourth season"
because it was created in 1973, four years after the third
and final season of the original series, and because most
of the original cast provided the voices. William Shatner,
Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle
Nichols, George Takei and Majel Barrett reprised their
characters and some contributed other voices as well. The
only major omission was Walter Koenig's Chekov, who was
replaced at the navigation console by Lieutenant Arex, the
three-armed alien who most prominently represented the
series' freedom to create non-humanoid characters. (Koenig
did write an episode.) The animated series consists
of 22 half-hour episodes.

Star Trek: The Original Series - Season Two (Series 2)
(Remastered Edition)
(1967)
The reworked
visual effects might irk purists but are an improvement
overall and some of the space exteriors are very exciting.
The picture, while obviously not high-definition quality,
is still much improved over the 2004 DVD release. Special
features here mostly mirror that 2004 set: 80 minutes of
featurettes ("To Boldly Go" season recap, " Kirk, Spock &
Bones: The Great Trio," "Star Trek's Divine Diva,"
"Designing the Final Frontier," and "Writer's Notebook:
D.C. Fontana"), though missing from this set are the text
commentaries on two episodes, the Red Shirt Logs, the
production art, and the photo gallery. There are two new
featurettes: "Star Trek's Favorite Moments," in
which cast members of later Trek franchises and
fans recall certain episodes, and "Billy Blackburn's
Treasure Chest, part 2," in which a Trek extra
tells stories and shows some of his on-set home movies.
And because season 2 includes "The Trouble with Tribbles,"
the set includes two bonus episodes: "More Tribbles, More
Troubles" from the Animated Series and "Trials and
Tribble-ations" from Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: The Original
Series - Season Three (Series 3)
(Remastered
Edition)
(1968)
Saved from the brink of
cancellation by its loyal fanbase, Star Trek's
third and final season rewarded them with a number of
memorable episodes. Tight budgets and slipping creative
control, however, made it the series' most uneven season,
though it did have some of the coolest episode titles
("For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky," "Is
There in Truth No Beauty," "Let That Be Your Last
Battlefield"). Some of the best moments involved a
gunfight at the OK Corral ("Spectre of the Gun"), a
knock-down drag-out sword battle with the Klingons aboard
the Enterprise ("Day of the Dove"), the ship getting
caught in an ever-tightening spacial net ("The Tholian
Web"), TV's first interracial kiss ("Plato's
Stepchildren," and it should be easy to guess who
participated), Sulu taking command ("The Savage Curtain"),
and Kirk's switching bodies with an ex-love interest
("Turnabout Intruder").
